4 Simple Ways to Protect Your Aging Brain

With all of the research concerning memory issues, it’s easy to overlook basic reasons as to why we are in the midst of this epidemic of losing brain function. Considering the excitement over the discovery of neuroplasticity, science fails to educate us of the basics of a healthy brain. Even though neuroplasticity is a very new discovery, the basic idea is pretty simple. If you’re constantly using your brain, you can stimulate the growth of new neurons, even at any age.

Now I know you’re thinking, “I use my brain everyday.” Well of course we all do but the key is using it to do something new or complex. That does the real work of stimulating new growth and increasing the vitality of the brain. But even neuroplasticity requires brain basics to make it work.

Are you starting to have memory lapses? Are you walking into a room and forgetting why you’re there? Are you losing your train of thought midway through a sentence? Don’t panic and run off to your doctor for a scary diagnosis. The first thing you should do is look to see if your brain is actually being maintained properly. Start to correct the nutritional deficiencies you’ve had for years that are starting to show up as memory loss.

I’ll let you in on a secret. The real progress in memory science isn’t coming out of laboratories or pharmaceutical companies. It’s not a new wonder drug. It’s been right under our noses for decades. It’s nutrition. In my own personal experience of working with memory issues, a lot of what people are experiencing is starvation of the brain. This could be going on for decades until a major stressor tips you over the edge into serious memory loss. Even then, you can still correct a lot of brain issues by going back to the basics.

Here are four simple things anyone can do to protect their brain and allow it to age gracefully:

#1 More Water – Less Alcohol

I know they’re both liquid but that is where the similarities end. The more alcohol you drink, the less likely you’ll actually drink water. I try to use a matching method for drinking wine. One glass of water follows every glass of wine. You’ll feel better the next day and also end up not drinking so much. Dehydration will exacerbate any inflammation caused by toxins, stress hormones, or lack of nutrition.

#2 Homocysteine and B Vitamins

So what is homocysteine? It’s an inflammatory chemical produced in the body in direct relation to high levels of animal protein an inadequate levels of certain B vitamins. You need extra B’s, especially folic acid and B12 to help the methylation process and keep homocysteine in check. High levels have been compared to scrubbing the inside of your arteries with a wire brush. The resulting inflammation starts a cascade of effects to compensate and deal with the inflammation. Excessive plaque and cholesterol start the ball rolling and long term can put you in a precarious position for heart attacks and stroke.

Even worse, it raises your chances of getting Alzheimer’s. In particular, women seem to increase they’re chances of getting this terrible memory stealer four times over. One of the other problems with homocysteine is that a huge portion of the population has a genetic variance that prevents the absorption of folic acid. They require a special form, methylfolate, to be able to absorb it.

B 12 has its own problem. It’s hard to digest and absorb, especially as you age and digestive energy weakens. There is a special form of B 12 too, called methylcobalamin, that solves this problem. Be sure to check your labels to make sure you’re not wasting your money on worthless forms of these brain nutrients. Both of these vitamins are found in our formula for TianChi in the right form and dose.

If you don’t have the right folic acid your brain can actually atrophy is seven different areas. Yes, atrophy! Add excessive homocysteine levels to the list and it’s like a brain on fire.

#3 Increase BDNF

BDNF or Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, is a growth hormone responsible for neurogenesis and neuroplasticity—the growth of new neurons. BDNF is associated with elevated moods, peak intelligence and memory. It also deceases your chances of getting Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. BDNF supports existing neurons, creates new ones, increases memory and learning, and even has anti-depressant activity. I know what you’re thinking. Where can I buy some? You can’t. But don’t despair, you can make your own.

The best thing about making your own is that you probably need the supplements used for elevating your BDNF anyway. DHA, green tea, resveratrol and curcumin are the best supplements that act as fuel for making BDNF. All of them are fantastic nutrients that go beyond just making BDNF.

DHA, an omga3 fatty acid found in fish and algae, is essential for long-term brain health. It’s the main fatty acids for increasing brain activity. Just taking DHA for 2 months have shown better memory in seniors with memory issues. Curcumin is a great anti-inflammatory. Green tea and resveratrol are powerful nutrients for elevating BDNF and both are famous as ant-aging supplements. The list of benefits are endless. Their anti-oxidant properties are off the charts. Better yet, both are in clinical doses in each packet of TianChi.

#4 Exercise

We all know exercise is good for you but now its been shown to be essential for brain health and elevated BDNF. So besides increasing oxygenation and blood flow, increasing mood and concentration, it’s now known to be a potent elevator of BDNF. So get out and move on a regular basis for your brain’s sake.

As you can see, when you get back to the basics of brain care its not that hard to take care of your brain. You just have to make the commitment and start. It might take a few weeks to see the difference but once it happens it will seem like a giant leap forward for your memory.
