Polygala: Opening Energy Flow

Polygala: Opening Energy Flow

When taking adaptogenic herbs, you might ask yourself, how do they actually work?  Most information on adaptogens focuses on major adaptogens, but there are minor adaptogens that have major effects on the body when properly used in a balanced formula.

One example is Polygala. It is one of the minor herbs in TianChi, which means it’s in the formula to enhance the overall effect of the other major adaptogens and tonic herbs. Polygala doesn’t build up energy; it opens channels to let energy flow.

Polygala enhances communication between the heart, the brain, and the kidneys. It can also open a channel of energy flowing from the reproductive system all the way to the heart. The combination is said to connect the emotions with sexual energy, creating the possibility for the deeper expressions of love.

A Heart Protector

It’s also known as the “heart protector” because it strengthens the pericardium meridian, which provides physical protection to the heart. The pericardium acts as a buffer to protect the heart from the emotional extremes of a highly stressful life. It’s in this regard that it is said to quiet the spirit, nourish the heart and brighten the mind.

This heart opening effect makes polygala so valuable in TianChi. To have an open mind you must first have an open heart. If the energy center of the heart is open, then the main energy centers of the brain follow along. This activates the frontal lobe and crown area, giving access to creative thinking and compassion.

Neuroprotective Properties

Extracts of polygala have been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier, as well as enhance acetylcholine activity and decrease plaque formation. Polygala even has neuroprotective properties which include down regulating many inflammatory molecules that could wreak havoc in your brain.

It’s these findings in modern science that shed light on why polygala has been used for thousands of years to protect the brain.

Polygala may be a minor herb in TianChi, but it plays a major role in opening the heart, activating the brain and “brightening the mind.”
